Yankees Reactions: Schlittler leads the Yankees to a Subway Series Opening Win
New York Improves to 28-17
QUEENS, NY — The Yankees offense was struggling coming into Queens with their ace on the mound on Friday to lead off the Subway Series. The Yankees won the game 5-2 over the crosstown Mets, and improve to 28-17 on the season.
Pitching Spotlight
Cam Schlittler continues to perform like an ace. He pitched 6.2 innings, striking out nine batters, walking just two batters and surrendering two hits. The one run he surrendered was a solo home run on an 0-2 pitch to Juan Soto.
With Max Fried officially being placed on the IL with a left elbow bone bruise, it is important for Schlittler to remain consistent. So far, he has. Schlittler’s season ERA is at its lowest point, 1.35. He is firmly in the conversation to be the Cy Young winner out of the American League.
Hitting Spotlight
Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm both had three hits. Chisholm was on base four out of his five at-bats. Chisholm Jr. had been struggling coming into the game, so his breakout is important. It made the guys around him noticeably looser and
“He looked great…he’s a great player” Yankees ace Schlittler said to the media postgame”.
Don’t think I forgot about Ben Rice. Rice had two singes, including one in the third inning that sparked a three-run Yankees rally with two outs off Clay Holmes. With the Yankees bullpen, every run matters, and Rice gave them an insurance run in the ninth inning with a solo home run off Craig Kimbral, his second home run against the future hall of famer.
Notable
Spencer Jones had two hits, including a 111 mph liner off the leg of Holmes. Why is this notable? It fractured the tibula of Holmes, putting him out for “a long time”, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.
What’s Next?
The Yankees will have two chances to win the Citi Field portion of the Subway Series. That includes tomorrow where the Yankees will send left-hander Carlos Rodón out for his second start of 2026. The Mets have yet to announce a starter. First pitch will be at 7:15pm on FOX.
