Yankees Reactions: A Series Loss to the Reds in the Bronx
ERC gives up three runs; NYY's offense went 0-9 with RISP
NEW YORK — Instant Reaction to the Yankees’ (46-30) 3-1 loss to the Reds on Father’s Day.
Elmer Rodriguez did not pitch his best today. He surrendered three runs on one swing, off the bat of Spencer Steer, with two outs in the fourth inning. It came after a leadoff walk and a two-out single.
Rodriguez did more than enough to keep the Yankees in the game but was only able to go 4+ innings in a stretch where the Yankees are without a team off day until July 2nd. He will be optioned to AAA after the game today.
The Yankees had good at-bats against Reds starter Chase Burnes. It only resulted in one run, a solo home run off the bat of Ben Rice. It was Rice’s 22nd home run of the 2026 season, and he’s been outstanding in the power department.
The Yankees were aggressive on the basepaths today, which also contributed to giving away outs. Jose Caballero overslid the bag at second base in the second inning to make the first out of that inning, and in the third inning Anthony Volpe was picked off at first base, though it looked like the first baseman was obstructing Volpe from getting back to the base.
The Yankees had chances, namely in the sixth inning with runners on the corners with two outs, but could not break through to chip at the Reds’ two-run lead.
Credit to Tim Hill, Paul Blackburn, Brent Headrick, and Fernando Cruz for pitching four scoreless innings in relief. It’s truly a shame the Yankees offense wasted that sort of appearance from their bullpen that has struggled at times.
The Yankees’ defense just collapsed in the top of the ninth with Camilo Doval on the mound. Jazz Chisholm Jr. booted a ball, and after a bad relay in, it ended up as a leadoff triple. The run would score off Camilo Doval on a RBI double by Marte that needed to be caught in left by Dominguez.
The Yankees have not won a series at Yankee Stadium against the Reds since 2014. They won the first game of the series.
After the game, the Yankees will go to Detroit to take on the Tigers. Tomorrow, it will be Gerrit Cole, who was originally scheduled to pitch today, going against Framber Valdez. First pitch will be at 6:10pm on YES.
Full Series Probables:
MON: RHP Gerrit Cole (2-1, 2.57) vs. LHP Framber Valdez (3-5, 4.09)
TUES: LHP Carlos Rodón (3-2, 3.50) vs. RHP Casey Mize (2-4, 2.58)
