Yankees Reactions: A 10th Inning Rally Lifted the Yankees over the Guardians
Cody Bellinger's two-run single in the 10th gave New York their first road extra inning win of 2026.
CLEAVLAND——The Yankees took this one against the Guardians in extra innings 7-5 and improve to 39-27 in 10 innings on the road.
It was the Yankees first road extra innings win of 2026.
Will Warren struggled through 4.1 innings of work, giving up three runs, two earned, and had issues throwing strikes overall in the outing. He was 10/20 with first-pitch strikes in the outing, which is less than you want. The key for players like Warren is to pepper the zone, and he did not do this in this outing.
Turning Point
The Yankees had a 4-3 lead going to the bottom of the sixth inning. After he got out of Will Warren’s fifth inning jam, Aaron Boone left Brent Headrick in the game to face the leadoff hitter of the inning, righty David Fry, and issued a four-pitch walk. Boone went to his bullpen, electing to go to Paul Blackburn, who promptly served up a two-run home run to Angel Martinez, and the Yankees found themselves trailing.
Star Performances
Paul Goldschmidt continues to be productive for the Yankees. In the first inning against Gabin Williams, Goldschmidt blistered a 94.6 MPH cutter 104.9 off the bat, the hardest one of Williams’s sinkers that has been hit this season for a two-run homer in the first inning. The Yankees need production in their lineup, and Goldschmidt has been good at providing that through this stretch.
Cody Bellinger has played like an MVP almost this whole season. Today, Bellinger picked up the biggest hit of the game, a two-run single in the top of the 10th inning against the Guardians' Shawn Armstrong. The Yankees have not had much success in extra innings on the road, but Bellinger provided the Yankees with exactly what they needed.
David Bednar also got a huge five outs in this one, earning the win for his efforts and slamming the door in the bottom of the 10th inning, and most importantly, he avoided the top of Cleveland’s lineup with runners on base.
Defense/Little Things
This play changed the game, and it has little to do with Caballero. Yes, it goes in the book as an E6, but it chopped off the mound and made it hard for Caballero to glove and make the play. This led to the then-tying run scoring after Warren lost the plate in the third inning.
Box Score
