Max Fried Leaves Game Wednesday With Apparent Injury
Yankees Ace gave up 3 runs in 3 innings and leaves the game after 61 pitches.
BALTIMORE, MD — It’s been a few starts since the Yankees lefty ace has had his stuff. Today, it was obvious is command was off.
After throwing just 61 pitches, the YES broadcast on Amazon Prime Video picked up lefty Max Fried walking down the tunnel and pitching coach Matt Blake on the phone with the bullpen getting Paul Blackburn up. After their offense went down 1-2-3 in the fourth inning, Blackburn was in the game.
Since spring training, it was clear that Fried’s command has not been totally normal compared to what it was last season. When Boone was asked by The Athletic of Fried’s lack of command, he pointed to a small sample size.
"I would say small sample in that he's always a guy that sprays it a little bit. Go watch games last year, this year. I think it's actually one of the things that also makes him really effective, because he obviously has a deep arsenal of pitches, so it's hard to really sell out to one particular thing with him.” Boone said. “But even when he's at his most dominant, he'll throw a ball off the backstop. That's just kind of part of who he is, but typically it doesn't lead to a lot of walks either.
“There have been a couple times where, obviously, last game where he walked two guys back-to-back on eight pitches. That can always be a little bit better. But it's also one of those things that kind of makes him tough to hit."
Today, upon his exit from the mound, Fried’s ERA climbed above three for the first time this season.
The Yankees announced that Fried left the game with left posterior elbow soreness. He will go for imaging tomorrow in New York with Dr. Christopher Amad. For those who don’t know, posterior means back, so it’s the back of the elbow on the side of the ulnar ligament, according to a medical expert.
